Busta Rhymes (born Trevor Tahiem Smith, Jr. on May 20, 1972 in Brooklyn, New York) is an American rapper. Busta moved to Uniondale, Long Island when he was 12 and graduated Uniondale High School in 1991. He attended George Westinghouse Career and Technical Education High School alongside Jay Z, DMX and Biggie Smalls. Always interested in music, by 1989, Busta had formed the East Coast hip-hop group Leaders of the New School. The group found moderate success but broke up in 1993. By that time, Busta had been making a name for himself, guest appearing on multiple songs. His solo breakout came in 1995 with his hit single, “Woo Haa! Got You All in Check.” From there, Busta became a fixture on the rap scene. He achieved his first #1 album with his seventh release, The Big Bang, in 2006. In 2011, Busta signed with Birdman’s Cash Money Records. Busta has had many run-ins with the law. In 2006, he was arrested for third degree assault. In 2004, he appeared in court on weapon possession charges. In 2009, Busta had to pay $75,000 in compensation for a 2003 assault. In Aug. 2015, Busta was arrested for allegedly throwing a protein shake at a New York City gym.

Busta has three children with Joanne Wood: T’Ziah, T-Khi and Trillian. He also has a daughter, Mariah, born in 1998 with Jill Miskelly. Busta is a committed Muslim who claims his spirituality has helped kept him grounded in life.
